The Hands, Hearts & Minds

As a Basic Surgical Trainee, she was awarded a prestigious Talent Development Fund award in 2007 to pursue research overseas for a year. She was involved in cancer stem cell research as a post-doctoral scholar at the institute for Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine, Stanford University. She went on to complete her Advanced Surgical Training in Plastic Surgery at the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital in 2013. Dr Wong received the Gold Medal for Best Performing Candidate in the Exit Examinations. She was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore upon completion of her training.

Dr Wong was subsequently awarded the MOH Health Manpower Development Programme Fellowship (HMDP) from 2015 to 2016. This allowed her to undergo advanced subspecialty training at the renown Kyorin University Hospital, Tokyo; which has the largest plastic surgery unit in Japan. Dr Wong was under the tutelage of Professor Kiyonori Harii and Professor Akhiko Takushima, who are world authorities on facial nerve conditions and also see the highest number of such patients within Japan. In addition, the hospital was renowned for breast reconstruction, reconstructive microsurgery, lower limb reconstruction, facial trauma, vascular malformation, eyelids and aesthetic surgery; allowing Dr Wong to receive training and experience in these areas. Wanting to further broaden her understanding of advanced techniques, she was a visiting surgeon with various hospitals and aesthetic clinics in Japan and Korea.

On her return, she helped to initiate and continues to participate in multi-disciplinary Facial Nerve Clinics in Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and National University Hospital to focus on providing best quality care for both subsidized and private patients who have facial nerve disorders. She is also a Visiting Consultant at KK Womens’ and Childrens’ Hospital. Dr Wong is the only facial nerve specialist in Singapore and the region who is well-versed in both the one-stage latissimus dorsi flap as well as the Labbe lengthening temporalis myoplasty for smile reanimation. She also often performs nerve grafting for early cases as well as static and dynamic techniques to improve eye closure and facial aesthetics. For patients with incomplete recovery after Bell’s palsy or causes, she specializes in botulinum toxin injections and neuromuscular retraining.

As a female plastic surgeon, she has deep understanding of the concerns of patients with breast cancer and strives to make the recovery journey as comfortable as possible. Her clinical expertise is in the entire range of advanced breast reconstruction techniques. These include methods using one’s own tissues from the abdomen, back and thighs; such as DIEP flap, SIEA flap, TUG/PAP flap and LD /TAP flap. Implant based reconstruction and fat grafting are also frequently performed. She performs supermicrosurgery including lymphatic venous anastomoses and lymph node transplants for breast cancer related lymphedema. Dr Wong is also keenly focused on other aspects of breast plastic surgery such as breast reduction, mastopexy and augmentation.

She is also well-experienced in reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, trunk and extremities. The underlying causes could be due to cancer, trauma or vascular disease etc. Having been a Senior Consultant in the largest public hospital in Singapore, she often collaborates with other experts in the multi-disciplinary management of such complex cases. For example, she performs local flaps after Moh’s surgery by the dermatologist for skin cancers. Dr Wong’s current work runs the gamut of Plastic Surgery, including the treatment of burns, scars, wounds and facial trauma.

Besides reconstructive surgery, she also specializes in aesthetic treatments of the face and body, which allows her to build on her love for delicate and refined work. These can be non-invasive (such as fillers, botox injection, lasers) or surgical (such as eyelid/facial aesthetic surgery, fat grafting, breast cosmetic surgery, liposuction and body contouring surgery). Dr Wong believes in understanding each patient’s specific needs before designing an individualized approach. A wide repertoire of techniques is required to achieve this, balancing the unique advantages and limitations of each method. The field of Plastic Surgery is constantly evolving and Dr Wong is committed to staying abreast of these advances to deliver her best to her patients. Combing meticulous technique and an eye for detail, she aims to minimize downtime with a focus on achieving a natural and harmonious outcome.

She has published and presented many research papers in scientific journals and conferences on diverse topics in Plastic Surgery. Dr Wong has been an invited speaker for medical and patient education, both locally and overseas. Besides teaching residents and trainee plastic surgeons, she has organized courses on facial nerve and reconstructive surgery. Academically, she is on the teaching faculty at both the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School. Dr Wong has keen interest in giving back. She enjoys volunteer mission work and participates in cleft missions to neighbouring countries.
